In the Moment Planning

As a team of professional practitioners, we have decided to change from forward planning to ‘In The Moment Planning’.

What is In the Moment Planning?

It is letting the children choose what to do, joining them, supporting them, extending their learning and then writing up what has happened.

It means working more closely with the children to observe an interest and extend it whilst it is happening – ‘in the moment’. You won’t see formal plans pinned up around the nursery or target sheets sent home or on the website anymore.

There is little or no structured pre-planning involved. The planning is in preparing the environment with materials and resources that will engage and stimulate/spark a child’s interest. It then becomes child led learning – teachable moments. These teachable moments become the opportunity for the practitioner to extend their interests and apply this interest to other areas of learning in the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum (Please see our Early Years Foundation Stage for details of the EYFS curriculum).

Each child will be a focus child each half term and getting parents involved in their child’s learning and development is also key to in In The Moment planning. They will have an opportunity to inform The Jays of things they have noticed they enjoy at home or things they have done that will help with our planning the environment for their child’s interest.

We will still carry out some adult led activities particularly around special occasions as we all like to celebrate special events.

OFSTED and the Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage

This states that ‘Practitioners must consider the individual needs, interests, and stage of development of each child in their care, and must use this information to plan a challenging and enjoyable experience for each child in all areas of learning and development.’
By
  • providing opportunities and environments that stimulate interests and engage children,
  • observing and listening very closely
  • identifying what has sparked their interest
  • asking open ended questions
  • looking at their next steps

In The Moment Planning will meet this statutory guidance whilst allowing a child to continue with the play that they are interested in.
